CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Wednesday Morning

The drive to Beacon Hill down Route 7 prompted Gunnar to start on what his fellow officers always referred to as “the boring tour.” He waxed nostalgic about the days when the scenery on the drive west out of Leesburg was filled with farms. “We went on a wine tour down there last year,” he might say, or “I dated a girl that lived off this road.” The other police officers found that irritating whenever they rode with him, but Annie had always kind of liked it. She found Gunnar’s deep voice soothing and his narration almost like a chant, and as a result, she had a wealth of information about all the inconsequential moments of Gunnar’s life in Loudoun County.

When Laura opened the door, she looked more rested than the last time Annie had seen her.

“Thanks for coming,” Laura said. “You have news?”

“Yes,” Annie said. “You know Detective Jansson.”

Laura glanced at Gunnar and nodded before walking into the living room and taking a seat on the sofa. A toilet flushed in another part of the house, and a few moments later David Cohen appeared and took a seat on the other end of the sofa.

Annie sat across from them in one of the velvet wingback chairs. Gunnar took the other.

“I appreciate you taking the time to meet with us this morning,” Annie said.

Laura nodded. “Of course.”

“We just have a few questions,” Gunnar said.

“All right then,” Cohen said.

“Did Nick ever mention divorce to you?” Annie asked.

Laura shook her head. “No.”

“So you two hadn’t discussed it?” Annie said.

“No. I wanted to have all the information at hand before I approached him. To be honest, I thought there was a chance, well...” Laura didn’t continue the thought and folded her hands in her lap, but she’d clearly been hoping Nick would change his ways.

“Okay.” Saying what she needed to was more difficult than Annie had anticipated.

“What did you find out?” Laura prompted, her fingers clenched tightly in her lap as if she were steeling herself for the answer. Gunnar sat silently, waiting for Annie.

Annie could do nothing but say it. “It appears that Nick had a relationship with a woman that resulted in a pregnancy.”

Laura gasped and pressed her fingers to her mouth. Tears began to fall. “Oh God. That makes so much sense.”

“What does?” Annie asked.

“A baby. Nick always wanted children. We’ve spent tens of thousands of dollars over the last couple of years for fertility treatments, but none of them worked for me. Oh God.” She put her face in her hands and began to cry in earnest. Her shoulders shook with sobs.

Another woman came into the living room. She looked like an older version of Laura. She was sedately dressed but completely accessorized.

“What’s happened?” she asked, clearly alarmed by the scene in front of her.

“Mom.” Crying, Laura went to her mother, who wrapped her in a comforting hug.

Laura’s mother glared at them.

David Cohen shifted uncomfortably in his seat.

Annie and Gunnar glanced at each other. Words didn’t need to be exchanged between them, and they stood in unison.
